Bonehew is a unique Ogre Axe Polearm. Most melee characters don't use Polearms because, while they do high damage, are quite slow. Also, Polearms have one big drawback: they require two hands, thus forcing the player to forgo the use of a Shield. Since Shields offer a % of Blocking attacks, with a successful Block negating all damage, and usually good Resistances, most Diablo 2 players will be loathe to give up the use of a Shield for a Polearm (even the Barbarian, who is able to invest points in Polearm Mastery)
However, there is one character that can only use Polearms as a weapon and cannot use Shields: The Mercenary from Act II. Is Bonehew a good weapon to give your Act II Mercenary?
The Stats:
2H Damage: (103-117) to (536-609)
Minimum Strength: 195
Minimum Dexterity: 75
Level Requirement: 64
+270-320% Enhanced Damage (varies)
Level 14 Corpse Explosion (30 Charges)
Prevent Monster Heal
30% Increased Attack Speed
50% Chance to Cast Level 16 Bone Spear on Striking
Socketed (2)
+270-320% Enhanced Damage (varies)
The boost to weapon damage on Bonehew approaches that of the more powerful Runewords. Needless to say, Bonehew does very respectable damage.
Level 14 Corpse Explosion (30 Charges)
Corpse Explosion is one of the Necromancer's most powerful attacks. However, Charges on Charged Items eventually run out, and most players don't bother going to the Blacksmiths to recharge them because the price to do so is exorbitant.
Since most players would equip Bonehew on their Mercenaries, this doesn't matter.
Prevent Monster Heal
This mod works on normal monsters, but not on Bosses, and not on other Players in PvP (Players vs. Players) PvM.
30% Increased Attack Speed
Since Polearms are slow weapons, even a little IAS helps in making the weapon quicker.
50% Chance to Cast Level 16 Bone Spear on Striking
Bone Spear is a powerful Bone spell from the Necromancer's Poison and Bone Spells Skill Tree. It summons a magical missile of bone that shoots and pierce the ranks of the Necromancer's enemies.
A Level 16 Bone Spear deals 154-162 Magic damage.
A 50% Chance to Cast Level 16 Bone Spear on Striking means that your Mercenary will cast a Bone Spear with over half of his successful attacks!
Socketed (2)
This gives you the ability to tailor Bonehew according to your Mercenary's needs. Most players put two Amn Runes in it due to the fact that putting Amn Runes in a weapon grants the Life Leech property to the weapon. Giving your Mercenary a weapon with Life Leech will really help in keeping him alive for longer periods of time.
Summary:
Bonehew is a very good Polearm choice for your Act II Mercenary, what with its good damage,Bone Spear Trigger and, if you equip Amn Runes in it, Life Leech. At the very least, it can make for a great placeholder weapon until you find a better Polearm weapon for your Mercenary, perhaps the Insight Runeword?
