It has been seen that spontaneous Internet Explorer pop-up windows and ironically, pop-up blocker software, render Windows XP computer unusable at times of need. Pop-ups usually are a means of advertising but there are times when the pop-ups mimic actual Windows and mislead the Internet user. Pop-ups exist on Internet in the same way as television commercials. Older, slow computers most often tend to crash or lock-up as a result of pop-up windows. Shutting down these computers, without actually closing the windows will cause loss of valuable data from the computer.
There are many ways to stop pop-ups. Windows XP users who have installed service pack 2 will have Internet Explorer upgraded to include a pop-up blocker. The pop up blocker can be activated by using Windows XP Professional version. Google Toolbar also includes a pop-up blocker that can be efficiently used to avoid unnecessary pop-ups from appearing on your computer. Firefox includes a built-in pop-up blocker. The latest version of Internet Explorer also includes a pop-up blocker. Both Firefox and Internet Explorer pop-up blockers are not 100% efficient but they do help in preventing the most annoying pop-ups. And the two also display a bar across the top while blocking pop-ups, which is particularly helpful in taking control over the blocking of pop-ups, manually.
A small, fast and configurable software package called Pop-up Ad Filter from Meaya can also be used significantly for blocking pop-ups. Running a spyware scan also helps in blocking most pop-ups. Running Spyware Blaster and Enable Internet Explorer protection and Mozilla/FireFox protection goes a long way in solving the problems related to unwanted pop-ups. Downloading and updating Spybot Search & Destroy has also proved useful. It is also beneficial to the set security level to "High" for Internet and Intranet zones in Internet Explorer.
Some advertisers to send information via the Internet use the Messenger Service originally designed to notify Windows users about their networks, and these messages could be used maliciously to distribute a virus as well. Hence, it is highly recommended to disable Windows messenger service to avoid pop-ups and harm to Computer. One other tip that could save pop-up menace is to run updated adware at the first sign of trouble.
However, it is important to note that pop-up blockers block even certain legitimate pop-ups that appear in websites. In view of this, pop-up blockers have been developed with an option to permanently allow pop-ups at certain websites.
Though there are these many methods to deal with pop-ups, pop-ups still continue to be the most used method for advertising through internet. It is just up to us to follow the tips listed above to avoid pop-ups from disturbing our work on the computer or even worse harming our computer.
